How close are you to the beach? (aka: "Are you on the beach" or "is there an ocean view?")
The beach is a one-minute stroll (we're the third house from the beach); the ocean is just visible from the ZEN Treehouse.
How do we get to onto the property?
Once you've made your reservation, look for an email confirmation and confirm it is accurate. Print hard copies of the two attachments and bring them—you'll need them to get here and to get in.
What time is check-in/check-out?
Check-in: 3:00-7:00 p.m.; Check-out: by 11:00 a.m. When making your reservation, please let us know if you'd like an early check-in or late check-out. We are sometimes able to accommodate such requests, other times it's not possible. Charges may apply. For those with late flights out, an option is to book one more night. (Unauthorized late check-out's will incur charges.)
Is your property "kid-friendly"?
Our property is ideal for baby boomers (or otherwise "mature adults"), however, guests booking the ZEN Treehouse or both Garden Suites may add one guest to their reservation (minimum age: 12). A $75/nt "additional guest" fee will apply.
Do we need to sign a "Rental Agreement"?
Yes, our Terms and Conditions of rental are here and online. Acceptance is required to complete a reservation.
May we have friends/family over?
Hale 'Nalo is a quiet retreat. To this end, we permit only registered guests on property.
How private is it?
The ZEN Treehouse occupies the entire second floor and is the most private of all our suites. Our Garden Suites are both corner suites that share one wall and face out into the gardens (each has its own outdoor table and seating in the garden area). For the most privacy, we recommend the ZEN Treehouse (refer Property Map).
Is the neighborhood quiet?
Our neighborhood is quiet, but bear in mind, it is residential. People live and work here, so do expect to hear sounds of life such as children playing or a lawn being mowed. (That being said, we mostly hear birdsong and the lovely sound of the ocean.)
Are there restaurants and shops nearby?
Yes! We are walking distance to several good eateries, plus a 7-11 and a McDonald's, and there are many dining and shopping options in bustling Kailua and Hawaii Kai (10 minutes by car).
Is the beach "safe"?
Waimanalo Beach has a fine sandy bottom with waves averaging 2-3 feet with no undertow or riptide. Safe is subjective, however. Respect your personal limits.
Do you offer monthly (long-term) rentals?
Monthly rates are 20% off the standard rate during off-peak months. It's best to inquire at least six (6) months ahead.
Is smoking permitted on the property?
Do you offer air conditioning?
We've utilize effective but greener options! Solar-powered roof vents, ceiling and floor fans, a shady garden and cross ventilation. (Tips: the coolest months are Oct-May, and the ZEN Treehouse is the coolest of all our suites.)
Are there exceptions made to the minimum stay requirement?
Yes, we welcome 2-3 night "short stays" that abut an existing reservation or fill an existing gap. Our reservation calendar offers these short stays. We do not offer one night stays.
May we cook?
Yes! All our suites have spotless and well-equipped kitchenettes with granite countertops, microwave, mini-fridge, toaster, coffee maker, bean grinder, hot induction cooktop, cookware, tableware & cutlery, and everyone has access to a propane barbeque.
What are the "taxes and fees"?
State sales and hotel taxes (14%) and a one-time cleaning fee are not included in the room rate. (Note: It is necessary that management add an additional cleaning fee to ZEN Treehouse reservations due to the double size of the suite. Unfortunately, our reservation system does not allow us to have different cleaning fees. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.)
Is there anything I should know about booking the holidays?
Yes. We are open, however, closed to new arrivals on Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years days; please plan accordingly. Rates and minimum stay requirements may be slightly higher over the holidays.
How and when do we pay?
A 50% deposit is required at the time of booking; we then auto-charge the balance at 8 weeks prior to arrival. (Reservations made less than 8 weeks to arrival will be charged in full at the time of booking.)
What is your cancellation policy?
With 8+ weeks notice: we offer a full refund less a cancellation fee of $50; with less notice, we refund re-booked nights, less the cancellation fee. We recommend travel insurance.
Are there pets at Hale 'Nalo?
Yes. We have pets, however, they are not allowed in our rentals. Important note: because our dog Sophie can be tentative with persons she hasn't met, please use the same caution that you would with any dog unfamiliar to you.
If I still have questions, what is the best way to reach you?
