Garden Suites now even more comfy!

We do our best to make our guests comfy, including any-everything short of air conditioning which isn’t terribly planet-friendly.

Last week we had a contractor come in and install a solar powered roof fan and BOY what a difference that has made. The room is cooler by far, making sleeping all the more pleasant.

We are SO impressed that in the coming days we’ll get one installed in Makai.

UPDATE: both our Garden Suites are now much cooler, thanks to solar fans having been installed at the top peak of the 14′ ceiling. Warm air rises and now, goes outside. Yippee!

Last month we took the leap to “get off the grid” and had a photovoltaic solar system installed, which means we now have the ability to harvest all our energy from the sun! WOO HOO!!!

SO, the next time you’re on your computer or taking a shower or doing a load of laundry at Hale ‘Nalo, you can ENJOY the fact that you’re using only the sun’s energy!

We love thinking of ways to make it easy for past guests to return! This time, we’re giving away 1-2 free nights lodging.

Here’s how it works:

When you make a reservation (minimum: 5 nights), it is assigned an in-house number. (We cannot say what number we’re at now, but it is within fair striking distance…)

If your reservation number is “Lucky #562″:

- we will give you one free night!

- and your stay is in April-May 2013, we’ll give you two free nights!

Recipe: Passionfruit (“Lilikoi”) Lime Bars

These luscious cookie bars may resemble ordinary lemon squares, but there’s nothing ordinary about them! Tart passionfruit and tangy lime complement each other perfectly. The crust can be made with graham crackers (or whatever cookies you have on hand or that need eating

Ingredients:

7 ounces of cookie crumbs

5 tablespoons butter, melted

4 tablespoons brown sugar

Pinch of salt

3 big juicy limes

3 ounces soft cream cheese

14 oz sweetened condensed milk

1 egg yolk

1/3 cup passionfruit juice or fresh pulp (see tip on removing seeds)

Directions: (Preheat oven to 325º)

Lightly spray/oil a 9″x9″ inch (or equivalent sized) baking pan.
Process the cookies in a food processor until they are fine crumbs. Stir the melted butter, brown sugar, and pinch of salt into the crumbs. Blend well.
Press the crumbs firmly into the pan, making a smooth layer.
Bake for about 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
Remove from the oven and set aside to cool.
Zest 2 of the limes and chop until fine, then juice all 3 limes, taking care to remove the seeds.
In a medium bowl, mix together the: condensed milk, lime juice, *passionfruit pulp (see below), cream cheese, egg yolk, a pinch of salt, and 1 tablespoon of the lime zest.
Pour this mixture into the pan over the cookie crust. Return pan to the oven and bake until center is set, about 20-25 minutes.
Remove pan from the oven and let cool on a rack for at least an hour. Chill in the refrigerator for another hour before cutting. Sprinkle bars with remaining lime zest.

*Note: To remove passionfruit seeds when using fresh pulp: scoop the pulp out of the fruit to measure 1/3C, then pulse pulp briefly in a blender or food processor (this breaks the seeds away from the juice) then press through a sieve to remove seeds. This takes a few minutes but the results are well worth it. A guaranteed hit at parties!

We love to grow things in our gardens… to help our planet (no transportation to the markets), to help our bodies (fresh is so healthy!), and to provide for our guests fresh herbs and greens while they are traveling, a real treat we’ve been told.

New banana orchard installed = more yummy bananas for everyone!

We’ve dedicated a 30 meter section of our hedge to a new installation of apple bananas. These are the really yummy ones that make other bananas obsolete!

It’ll take 6-8 months for them to start producing. We are excited and can barely wait!

Another reason we’ve put these in where they are is so that they will provide more shade to our Mauka Garden Suite. We choose green-options when it comes to keeping cool… fans, cross ventilation, high ceilings…. and now, a stand banana trees that will provide additional shade to this suite, making it even more comfy.

Waimanalo Petting Zoo: a real hoot!

Colton Farms, located in Waimanalo, has started a petting zoo. In it you’ll see wild pigs, lots of chickens, geese and even a few burros. This is a serious stop, folks.

The Hale Nalo “Refer a Friend” Program makes it easy for you to tell your family, friends and colleagues about us and get rewarded at the same time! For every one of your referrals who becomes our paying guest, we will notate your guest record with a $50 credit. In addition, your referrals also get a $50 credit on their first-time booking. The following terms and conditions apply to this Program:

You (aka “Referrer”) must be a past guest.
Your family, friends, or colleagues (aka “Referees”) must book a first-time stay with us.
You may earn one referral credit per booking (Couples will count as one referral.)
Referees must choose “Refer a Friend” when prompted to say how they heard about us.
Referees must tell us that you referred them when booking (in the “guest comments” area).
Referees will get $50 deducted from their total on their first stay.
You will also receive a $50 credit for each of your referrals that book a first-time stay.
Referral program credits do not apply for any referrals prior to September 2012.
Hale Nalo referral credits are not transferable or redeemable for cash; they expire 2 years after they post, so chop-chop!
