When: Saturday, August 10, 2013
Where: Waimanalo Beach Park (just up the road, easy walk from Hale ‘Nalo)
Cost: The purchase of event t-shirts*
If you’re a lover of Hawaiian culture and enjoy authentic Hawaiian music, this event is an absolute “must see”.
During Gabby Pahinui’s life, weekends at the Pahinui home in Waimanalo were a continuous jam session, or “kanikapila“, with dozens of musicians, both young and old, coming by to jam with “the Master”. This day-long celebration features and perpetuates the “slack key” music of Gabby Pahinui. If you want a taste of authentic Hawaiian music and culture, this event is for you.
This event is FREE, however, it costs money to put on (and if you were paying to see these groups perform, the ticket price would be astronomical). Please be generous and purchase a few event tee-shirt (or two , patronize the booths (food and crafts will be available for purchase all day).
Tips: Get there early to stake out a spot in the shade because the sun can be brutal. Take plenty sunscreen, a big bottle of water, a wide brimmed hat and a mat to sit on. For more information and details about the line-up, visit: http://www.gabbypahinui.com/
The event will feature both ancient and modern forms, and dancers will perform on one of the few remaining “pa” (hula mounds) in Hawaii.
There is plenty of public seating, and local food and crafts will be available for purchase throughout the day. The event is free, so plan on picking up an event t-shirt to help ensure the viability of this wonderful cultural event.
We’ve dedicated a 30 meter section of our hedge to a new installation of apple bananas. These are the really yummy ones that make other bananas obsolete!
It’ll take 6-8 months for them to start producing. We are excited and can barely wait!
Another reason we’ve put these in where they are is so that they will provide more shade to our Mauka Garden Suite. We choose green-options when it comes to keeping cool… fans, cross ventilation, high ceilings…. and now, a stand banana trees that will provide additional shade to this suite, making it even more comfy.
